Understand ranges, combinations, blockers, value bets and bluffs without treating a commentator’s guess as knowledge of hidden cards.

A range is a set of possibilities

When someone says “I put them on a range,” they are describing possible hole cards, not reading hidden information. Observed actions can make some holdings more or less plausible. A check does not remove every strong hand, and a raise does not leave only the best hands.

Keep three things separate: cards physically possible, hands the player plausibly reaches this point with, and how often that player chooses this action with each hand. The last two require assumptions. One revealed hand is evidence about that hand, not a complete description of the player.

PokerStars Learn: thinking about ranges

A hand name is not one combination

AKs means ace-king of the same suit; AKo means different suits. Before any cards are known, a pocket pair such as QQ has six combinations, AKs has four, and AKo has twelve. A range chart’s boxes therefore do not all represent the same number of deals.

Ask which response the bet is trying to get

Betting ideas you may hear in commentary
IdeaPlain-language intention
Value betGet called by enough worse hands to make the bet worthwhile.
BluffGet better hands to fold rather than rely only on winning at showdown.
Semi-bluffBet or raise a hand that can improve, with a possible immediate win from a fold.
Deny equityMake hands with a chance to improve give up that chance by folding.

These descriptions can overlap. A bet with a pair can get a worse hand to call and also make another hand fold its chance to improve. A strong hand is not automatically a value bet at every size: which worse hands would call matters. A failed bluff can still have had a sensible rationale, and a successful bluff does not prove that repeating it is profitable.

Action names describe the sequence

A continuation bet, or c-bet, follows earlier aggression, commonly the preflop raiser betting the flop. A check-raise starts with a check and then raises a later bet on that street. A barrel is another bet on a later street. None of these names tells you whether the player has value or a bluff.

An overbet is larger than the pot before that bet. Listen for the denominator when a commentator says “half pot” or “one-and-a-half pot.” If the current pot is 2,000, a 1,000 bet is half pot; a 3,000 bet is 1.5 times the pot. It is not 1.5 times the opponent’s previous bet.

A model is useful only with its assumptions

Two reviews can recommend different actions because they assign different ranges, action frequencies or tournament values. An exact-looking percentage does not resolve those disagreements. Ask what would change the conclusion, not just whether software produced the number.

For a viewer, the productive question is: “What worse hands could call, or what better hands could fold?” That tests the explanation without pretending to know the opponent’s exact cards. This page deliberately provides no opening chart or one-size-fits-all betting instruction.

Check your reading

Does a three-bet mean a raise to exactly three times the previous amount?

No. It describes a reraise in the betting sequence. Its actual size must be stated separately.

If you hold A♠, can the opponent have A♠ K♠?

No. That exact combination is physically impossible. Other ace-king combinations may remain, and whether they are played still depends on the assumed range.

A player bets with a flush draw. Is that definitely a pure bluff?

Not necessarily. It can be a semi-bluff because the hand may improve if called. The label describes a possible purpose, not a guarantee that the bet is good.
